What is the Health and Social Care Foundation Apprenticeship standard made up of?

The standard is made up of two components

A multiple-choice question test focusing on knowledge, including legislation, policies, codes of conduct, infection prevention, and safeguarding. Apprentices will answer questions in an invigilated environment. It allows apprentices to demonstrate the fundamental knowledge mapped to this assessment method. Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) test understanding of core principles and procedures.

The assessment is set and marked by TQUK, using an automated marking system. It takes place early in the apprenticeship to ensure apprentices have the necessary foundational knowledge for safe practice in the sector.

The test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. Each question has four possible answers, one of which is correct. One mark is awarded for each correct answer. Apprentices will have a maximum of 45 minutes to complete the test.

Secondly, a scenario-based practical observation with questioning. A practical assessment where the apprenticeship assessor will conduct and assess the observation with questioning. There are three simulations included in the assessment, which can be selected from a range of scenarios depending on the setting in which the apprentice works. Each scenario is made to check skills and knowledge in a way that’s fair and relevant. Each scenario lasts for ten minutes, followed by 10 minutes of questioning.
