How are Functional Skills scripts marked?
Functional Skills scripts are marked using a simple process. Here is an outline:
- Once the exam is completed, it is allocated to an examiner.
- The examiner marks the paper and submits it.
- All marked exams are then reviewed by the Chief Examiner.
- If the exam falls within the “borderline” range - 5 marks above or below the pass mark - it will be checked and second marked by the Chief Examiner before results are released.
- In addition to borderline scripts, the Chief Examiner also second marks a minimum of 10% of exams outside this range to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- The borderline range varies by subject and level. For example, for a Level 2 Maths paper with a pass mark of 33, any score between 28 and 38 will be second marked to verify the result before it’s released.
